GRATITUDE TO THE DOG THAT SAVED MY LIFE

A report by my dearly missed mother:

I was only two years old and I was playing on the bow of the small boat that served as my mother’s dental office. It was a winter morning in the Western Brazilian Amazon, early 1960s.

At 27 years old, she was seeing a patient from the riverside, while I played on the bow with King, a mixed-breed dog. The boat was named ‘Jaimar’, a fusion of my father’s name, Jairo, and her name, Adamar.

Suddenly, I stumbled and fell into the turbulent and treacherous Amazon River. I disappeared for seconds into the current, along with King, who had jumped in and held me with his teeth. The boat’s engineer witnessed the scene and jumped into the water, managing to rescue us a few meters downriver. Had it not been for the dog’s protective gesture and his attitude of not letting go of me, one or both of us would have perished.

After the incident, my mother decided to stop cruising, and settled in the city of Porto Velho. For two more years, King was with us, always faithful and playful, until he was run over by a car. Soon after his death, one rainy night, my mother, always caring, noticed that my bed was empty. She got desperate and went looking for me in the backyard, where she found me sitting beside the place where he was buried.

I have never forgotten that experience, which has fostered my love for dogs, for their loyalty and protective instincts, and for how they are happy to simply be able to accompany us in their short existence. I could never be indifferent if I knew that an animal so docile and affectionate is exposed to mistreatment or abandoned to its fate, waiting for adoption by some evolved and generous soul.

Repentinamente, tropecei e caí no caudaloso rio Amazonas, turvo e traiçoeiro.
